 9/12/2007
Korea DPR, out-sized by the US Women, used their opportunities well to pull a 2-2 tie out of the first game of group B in the Women's World Cup in China.
The two teams played a no score first half, with a header by Abby Wambach just missing and careening off the crossbar. However five minutes into the second half Wamback connected on a Kristine Lilly serve. Just minutes late, Wambach had to leave the field for nine minutes to get a gash in her head stitched up. With a woman short, the Koreans make good on the opportunity to score one in the 58th minute and another goal in the 62nd minute.
Once Wambach returned, the Americans increased their attack and in the 69th minute Heather O'Reilly tied up the game. It would remained tied to the final whistle.
Next up for the US is the Swedish team on Friday followed by the Nigerian women on September 18th. The USA is a two-time and defending World Cup champion. They will need wins against their two opponents to assure that they move out of their bracket into the quarterfinals. Wisconsin resident Leslie Osborne did not have any playing time in the Korean game.
Games are televised on ESPN. The Sweden game will be televised live at 3:55 AM on September 14th and the Nigerian game will be televised live at 6:55 AM on September 18th. More Information
