News ReleaseUS Women Bounce Back in Grand Form
 10/1/2007
The US Women showed the world that they still had the power to compete at the highest levels as they dispatched Norway 4-1 to take the bronze at the Women's World Cup in China.
Behind the aggressive anticipation of Abby Wambach's striking the Americans scored a goal in the first half and then another quickly at the start of the 2nd half. Abby scored off of touches from her teammates that rebounded or fell short. This would be all the US needed to secure the bronze, but Lori Chalupny and Heather O'Reilly added two more to the scoreboard to send a clear message that the US wasn't going to go quietly home from China.
All the team contributed to the final outcome with a strong defensive game played and positive team cohesiveness despite some rocky moments during the World Cup. Vetern Kristine Lilly playing in her last Women's World Cup nearly scored first with a shot that just skimmed the crossbar.
Despite losing the opportunity to defend their title, the women did achieve a much envied record of never finishing outside the top three. In the finals, Germany stunned a strong and aggressive Brazilian team with a 2-0 victory. The US women already have their sights set four years ahead in order to prepare to regain the World Cup Championship. More Information
