News ReleaseUSA U20 MNT LOSES IN EXTRA TIME TO AUSTRIA
 7/16/2007
Dejection and frustration could be seen in the body language of the American players after the U20 MNT lost to Austria 2-1 in the FIFA U20 World Cup.
While the USA hoped to move on to the semi-final round, they couldn't overcome a strong Austria offense. While the US scored first, the Austrians finished off the first half with a rebound goal. The tie held until the 13th minute of overtime, when Erwin Hoffer on a free kick, powered one past goalkeeper Chris Seitz. Seitz had played well throughout the game, but was obviously still hampered by the injury that had kept him out of the match against Uruguay. The 2-1 score held up through the overtime. Despite the loss, the young Americans left an impression with their strong defense and tenacious attack. The effort put forth in the Austrian game was no less intense, but still fell short. Their quarterfinal appearance shows that the US has come a long way in developing players and understanding how to prepare for major international events. This young team will yield a number of players going forward to represent the USA.
Wisconsin native Tim Ward came into the game at the 81st minute and played the remainder of the match. He played a total of 131 minutes in three matches at the World Cup. More Information
