News ReleaseUS Women Lose in World Cup Semi-Final
 9/27/2007
In a stunning reversal of fortunes, the US women coming off a 51 game unbeaten streak, found themselves roundly defeated 0-4 by an exhuberant and intense Brazilian squad.
The defending champions will have to watch Germany and Brazil (in a rematch of the men's World Cup) go for the title. Brazil had the US in their sights since the World Cup began two weeks ago. They had lost to the US Women in the finals in 2004, and they knew they had to bring on strength and determination to prevent another loss to the Americans.
The match was clearly owned by the Brazilians as they scored off an American own-goal in the 20th minute, and then went on to score in the 27th, 56th and 79th minutes. The job only got tougher for the US when Shannon Boxx was dismissed from the field at the end of the 1st half, leaving the US team a woman down for the final 45 minutes. Still the US did have 12 shots on goal and didn't give up trying to create scoring opportunities. But the Brazil women were too tenancious, and the first half 0-2 deficit was just too difficult to overcome with only 10 players on the field.
