USA U20 MNT HEAD TO U20 WORLD CUP QUARTERFINALS

7/12/2007

With a tournament-best nine goals in their group play, the USA U20 MNT was poised to have their best World Cup finish since 1989. But the tenacious team from Uruguay wasn't going to make it easy for them.

The level of zeal with which these two teams played became apparent with 22 fouls in the first half. The Uruguayan team took a defensive position earlier on and foiled the American play. But it wasn't until the 73rd minute that Uruguay scored, leaving the US just 17 minutes to even the score. They managed to do so in the 87th minute, although the Uruguayans had a last second shot carom off the post to nearly end the US run.

In overtime the US picked up the pace and although it took them into the second overtime period, the US used a well-placed corner kick by Freddie Adu to finish the game.

The Americans now move on to meet Austria in their quarter-final in Toronto on 14 July. Tim Ward, a former Wisconsin ODP player did not see any minutes in this game, but was a part of the victory against Brazil in group play.
