Each year, the WI Youth Soccer Association awards scholarships in the amount of $500 each, to three boys and three girls who are members of a WI Youth Soccer affiliated club team. Mike Kabanica served as the president of Wisconsin Soccer Association for nearly two decades up until his passing in October 1996. This Youth scholarship program is a testament to Mike Kabanica’s legacy to the growth and development of soccer in the state of Wisconsin for both youth and adult programs. 2009 Mike Kabanica Scholarship Winners Announced Congratulations to the recipients of the 2009 Mike Kabanica Scholarship, awarded annually to six graduating seniors who are members of Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association. Lindsey Boyke of Verona is currently a member of the Madison 56ers and has played for her high school’s varsity team all four years. She also volunteers time doing fundraising for the Millennium SC, providing soccer opportunities for underprivileged players. She is also an exemplary student and member of the National Honor Society. In addition to her volunteering in soccer, Lindsey is very active in local community service activities. She has her sights set on a career in orthopedic medicine. Kara Delie lives and plays in Green Bay with FC Green Bay. She is also active as a player with the Wisconsin ODP program and has assisted in numerous soccer camps throughout the state including Special Olympics. A member of the Spanish Society and National Honor Society, she has demonstrated her commitment to learning. Through her many extracurricular activities, Kara has proven her ability to “lead through service” as documented by her high school counselor. Amy Zelko is a member of SC Waukesha, played with Catholic Memorial High School for the past three years and has been a member of Wisconsin Youth Soccer for 12 years. She is also active as a referee and has participated in Wisconsin’s TOPSoccer Program as a volunteer. Active in numerous community organizations, Amy continues to give back to others locally and globally. She cites fellow Catholic Memorial standout Leslie Osborne as her inspiration. Ken Pisaniello resides in Appleton and plays for FC Magic where he also volunteers. A two sport letterman (soccer and track), he has enjoyed the success as an individual and member of a team. Ken is also very successful in the classroom, maintaining straight A’s while also being active with the symphonic orchestra, receiving solo and ensemble awards in three years of high school. Undecided on his major at this time, he is looking forward to attending the University of Wisconsin – Madison this fall. Nick Pjevach of Pewaukee plays for his local club, Pewaukee SC and has been involved in soccer for 12 years. A grade 9 referee, he is also very involved supporting his club activities including working as a summer camp counselor the past few years. In addition to all of the activities Nick’s been involved in locally, he participated in his church’s youth group mission trip to the Rosebud Native American Reservation in South Dakota working with underprivileged children. Neil Scannell plays for the Grafton SC and has been a member of the varsity team all four years while attending Campbellsport High School. He has also lettered in five other sports . . . baseball, golf, basketball, wrestling and track. Another outstanding academic student, Neil plans on combining his successes in the classroom with those on the field in pursuit of a degree in physical education followed up by an advanced degree in educational leadership. About the Mike Kabanica Scholarship Annually WYSA selects three boys and three girls to be awarded the Mike Kabanica Scholarship. Kabanica served as Wisconsin Soccer Association President for nearly two decades up until his passing in October 1996. The scholarship program is a testament to his legacy to the growth and development of youth soccer in the State of Wisconsin. Awardees are selected based on accomplishments in the classroom and on the soccer field, as well as contributions to their community through volunteerism and other community service activities. Each will receive $500 to be used towards their college education. Look for the announcement inviting applications for the 2010 Mike Kabanica Scholarship in Fall 2009.
